1900 Colt Automatic

This detail from the 1897 patent drawing shows the barrel and links highlighted.  The pressure of the recoil spring forces the barrel into its upper, locked position.  Under recoil, the two links force the barrel to move downward about 1/4 inch and out of engagement with the slide as it moves to the rear.
