I recently went out and bought a North American Arms .22 long rifle derringer.
I guess it has the traditional shape for grips on a derringer, but I can’t see how anyone can get hold of the gun well enough to shoot it using the standard grips. I found that if I pressed my thumb up against the back of the cylinder, I could keep the gun from jumping up when I fired it and at least keep the round on the target. But the sharp edges of the cylinder dug into my thumb. I decided what I needed was a left side grip that allowed some room for my thumb near the top, so I could hold the gun down with my thumb without having to push it up against the cylinder. Obviously, I was going to have to make something. I figured if I was going to go to all the trouble of making grips, I should use a material that would improve the looks of the gun. I wanted to use horn, but I didn’t have a ready source for horn and wasn’t sure I could find any thick enough. So I asked my good buddy if he had some deer antler I could work with.
