Get A Grip
by Ed Buffaloe
One of the things I’ve learned over time is that if a gun doesn’t fit your hand, you aren’t going to be able to hit much with it. Sometimes, just a small change in the shape of the grip will make all the difference.
I’ve always had problems with the standard wooden grips that come on Smith & Wesson revolvers--they never seem to fit my hand. I’m sure some folks love them, and I love the way they look, but I can’t hit anything with them. I have a very nice old Model 36 with a square butt that never felt right in my hand. My accuracy with the gun was very erratic, but I had a friend who never missed with it. So I started looking around for some grips. I found an old set of Pachmayr’s that fit. They were outsized and made the gun look funny, but I could hit with them. Later, I bought another set of Pachmayr’s with finger grooves and a nice cutout for my thumb on the left, and I took my Dremel tool and ground off most of the bottom of the grip.
